In preparing a sermon on Proverbs 4:23 ("Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."), I began compiling a list of verses in Scripture which describe a transformed, regenerate heart.
As a parent, I know all too well the temptation of trying to shepherd behavior without shepherding the heart. After all, it's a lot easier to say, "Stop that!" rather than take the time to ask, "So, what's going on inside that led you to do that? Let's talk . . ."
In the Bible, the clear emphasis is on the heart, as behavior flows from the heart (hence Proverbs 4:23). No wonder God is intensely focused on our hearts (1 Sam. 16:7). The heart is critical, and as I am learning, to focus on anything less as a parent is to fall short of what God wants me to aim for in my parenting.
And may I add, what a way great way to sense dependency upon God than to aim for the heart! Anyone can legislate behavior change, but it is ultimately God who transforms the heart.
All that being said, below represents a working list I hope to make regular use of when praying for my children's hearts. May it bless and challenge all who take the time to read through these verses . . .
Father, I pray you, by the power of your Spirit and through the accomplished work of your Son on the cross, would grow my children to have a . . .

awesome - how ironic - I just started the book "Don't Make Me Count to Three" A Mom's Look at Heart-Oriented Discipline (Ginger Plowman). It's teaching me more about self than the kids! Everytime I pick it up I think of the Proverbs series - almost all her scriptural referrences go back to Prov. Very timely - thank you God!
