A New World

At the risk of appearing vain, I am posting a sermon I was humbled to deliver this past weekend at our church (http://www.westoverchurch.com/) concerning God's perspective on disabilities. While I wouldn't wish listening to me on anyone, I post this for two reasons:

1) I want my son to one day know of the impact he has had, by God's grace, on his papa. Were it not for Timothy's birth and life, I would never think to speak about disabilities much less know what to say. When I think of the people my son has impacted indirectly, I shudder with joy.

2) I desire for as many people possible to catch a glimpse of God's love and passion for those affected by disabilities. My hope is this sermon will provide a mere reflection of the Gospel and its impact upon the world of disabilities.

Like I told someone yesterday, while this sermon took me 35 minutes to speak and 2 months to write . . . God took over two years to speak and write these truths into my life. Timothy, my son, you have been and continue to be an instrument in our Heavenly Father's hand . . . to shape your earthly father's heart.

  1. The blessings to know you, Lewis family, continue to pile up as we see God's hand upon your lives. You bring a whole new meaning to "chosen."

Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us who love you.

  2. Chris, God has so gifted you in such a beautiful way. I remember when Timothy was born and when we as a singles group prayed for you and your family because of his disability. I remember praying and at the same time dealing with my own anger and heartache on your behalf. I think I have told you before but my nephew has autism and John's sister has downs and of course you know my cousin Stephen....I am extremely touched by this message and will be sharing it with others. I have never heard a message on disabilities which seems absurd BUT who better to deliver such a message than someone who has experienced personally all of the emotions that goes into finding out a family member (in your case, a son) has (or will have) a disability. Thank you for sharing your heart in this message. And Timothy, thank you for being a wonderful teacher to us...just be being the wonderful child that you are!!!

    Love,

  3. I found you while doing research for my m. div.

The only suggestion I would make to what's discussed in this sermon is encouraging service/ministry WITH people with "disability"...using their abilities and reminding people with "disability" that they can serve God the way they are!
